Demystifying Vitamin C in Skincare: Which Form is Best for Your Skin?

So much of what I create is based on my personal experience; all the OCD reading on natural ingredients and my pet peeves.

"Vitamin C has cemented its status as a hero ingredient in skincare, celebrated for its ability to brighten skin, fight free radicals, and boost collagen. "

See Kitchen Recipe below.

Vitamin C is a key player in skincare for its antioxidant properties, collagen-boosting abilities, and brightening effects. The challenge lies in finding a stable, effective formulation that works for your skin type and concerns. I've been messing around with Vitamin C for decades, making different solutions for myself. And I absolutely loved it! But there was one big problem - it only lasted a few days before it went bad. Between a busy life and frankly, procrastination, let's just say that it didn't get re-made a whole lot. :) I shared my Vitamin C Serum with a few friends now and then, and they loved it and wanted me to bring it to Mayuur Naturals. Obviously, the serum version would not work because it is so unstable and turns brown after a few days.

So, I kept researching for a solution that would be all natural, vegan, chemical free and preservative free. Did you know there are different kinds of Vit C ingredients? None of them worked for me because of two main reasons - I don't do chemicals of any sort, and their potency was just not as good as what I was using. There are Vit C that is water soluble or oil soluble. I don't like water in my products because any time you use water, you have to use a chemical preservative. While the Oil soluble would not require chemicals, it is not so potent and for my first Vit C product, I wanted full potency.

The solution, of course, was the Marine Lavender Face Wash. I could use the best kind of Vitamin C for the skin, and it would stay fresh in its powder form until it was ready to be used by mixing it with water. For those who are not familiar, that is my way of bypassing preservatives. Most of Mayur Naturals face masks are in powder form, so they remain fresh until you take a little bit in your palm and add water. I also use the same L-Ascorbic powder that is used in food production, so I feel pretty good about that. Plus, it met my criteria of being all natural, vegan, chemical free and preservative free

As usual, I test on myself first. I was travelling internationally where air pollution is known to be extremely high. I was also under a huge amount of stress. I ended up using the Marine Lavender Face Wash morning and night just to wash my face and the effects were crazy. In the past, this place turned my skin grey. This time, my skin was smoothing out, the neck lines were diminishing and my skin never looked better. on returning Stateside, I sent out to a few amazing clients who always help me test products and with their feedback, the Marine Lavender Face Wash came to life. It is full of goodness, combining Marine Dead See Mud, Kelp. It also has real Lavender flower which helps sooth the skin. I always finish with the Elixir Face Serum which has a lot of Vit E and these two Vitamins love each other (truly!)

Title: Why L-Ascorbic Acid is the Gold Standard in Vitamin C Skincare

Introduction

Vitamin C has cemented its status as a hero ingredient in skincare, celebrated for its ability to brighten skin, fight free radicals, and boost collagen. Among the various forms of Vitamin C available, L-ascorbic acid consistently stands out as the gold standard. But what makes it so effective, and why should you consider it for your routine? Let’s delve into the science and benefits of L-ascorbic acid and why it’s the go-to choice for many skincare enthusiasts and professionals.

What is L-Ascorbic Acid?

L-ascorbic acid is the purest, most bioavailable form of Vitamin C. This means that it’s immediately active and ready to deliver its benefits to the skin without needing to be converted.

Key Benefits:

  1. Potent Antioxidant Protection

    • L-ascorbic acid neutralizes free radicals generated by UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental aggressors.

    • It reduces oxidative stress, which can accelerate aging and damage skin cells.

  2. Collagen Synthesis

    • Essential for collagen production, L-ascorbic acid helps to maintain skin’s firmness and elasticity.

    • Clinical studies have shown that it boosts collagen fiber density, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  3. Skin Brightening

    • By inhibiting melanin production, L-ascorbic acid fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

    • It enhances skin’s radiance, giving it a brighter, more even tone.

  4. UV Damage Repair

    • While not a substitute for sunscreen, L-ascorbic acid works synergistically with SPF to reduce the damage caused by UV exposure.

Why L-Ascorbic Acid Outperforms Other Forms of Vitamin C

Potency

  • Studies consistently show that L-ascorbic acid, particularly at concentrations between 10-20%, delivers the most noticeable results for skin brightening and anti-aging.

Proven Efficacy

  • L-ascorbic acid is the most researched form of Vitamin C, with numerous clinical trials supporting its benefits. A study published in Dermatologic Surgery confirmed its effectiveness in reducing photodamage and improving skin texture.

Synergy with Other Ingredients

  • L-ascorbic acid performs exceptionally well when combined with Vitamin E and ferulic acid, which enhance its stability and efficacy.

Drawbacks and How to Address Them

  • Stability: L-ascorbic acid is sensitive to light, heat, and air, which can cause it to oxidize.

    • Solution: Look for products in opaque, airtight packaging and store them in a cool, dark place.

  • Irritation: Its low pH (below 3.5) can make it unsuitable for sensitive skin.

    • Solution: Start with a lower concentration (e.g., 10%) and gradually increase tolerance.

Who Should Use L-Ascorbic Acid?

L-ascorbic acid is ideal for:

  • Skin types: Normal, oily, or combination skin.

  • Concerns: Hyperpigmentation, fine lines, dullness, and sun damage.

  • Individuals looking for visible results in a relatively short time frame.

For very sensitive or extremely dry skin, derivative forms like sodium ascorbyl phosphate may be more suitable.

How to Incorporate L-Ascorbic Acid into Your Routine

  1. Apply in the morning after cleansing, before moisturizer and sunscreen.

  2. Pair with SPF for enhanced UV protection.

  3. Use consistently for at least 8-12 weeks to see noticeable results.

Conclusion

While other forms of Vitamin C offer benefits, L-ascorbic acid remains unmatched in its potency and proven efficacy. Its ability to brighten, protect, and rejuvenate skin has earned it a well-deserved reputation as the gold standard. If you’re looking for transformative results and are ready to commit to its proper use, L-ascorbic acid is a powerful addition to any skincare routine.

Kitchen Recipe

I have often spoken about my grandmother that chased this child around the house with stuff from the kitchen to slather on our hair and faces. This is a frequent one. If you have the time to do this, it is really good for your skin.

When Oranges were in season and we had freshly squeezed OJ in the morning, Grandma would save the peels. She would then take the fresh cream off full fat milk that arrived that day and make a paste with the peel.

In the modern kitchen, take the peel from 1-2 oranges, 2-3 teaspoons of plain yogurt or milk, make a paste in a blender. It should be a thick paste. Apply to face and neck. Let it sit for 30mins before washing it off.

Always check for allergies by doing a test patch first.
